Descriptions

The River Mahakam is the largest river in East Kalimantan province of Indonesia, with a catchment area of about 77,100 km2. The middle Mahakam region is a subsiding area, where about 30 shallow lakes are connected to the river by so-called tie channels. These lakes modulate the river discharge, by alternately feeding and draining the River Mahakam, preventing extreme floods or low flow conditions. Part of the runoff that feeds the Mahakam is derived from peat domes, which are difficult to monitor. The hydrology of the middle Mahakam region is further complicated by tidal effects on water levels, which extend to the lakes region.

The catchments, and the East Kalimantan province in general, is highly susceptible to El Nino – Southern scillation (ENSO) variability. This research is part of the Mahakam research cluster entitled “Upsetting the balance in the Mahakam delta: past, present and future impacts of sea-level rise, climate change, upstream controls and human intervention on sediment and mangrove dynamics”. The cluster of projects aims to understand the integrated impact of human interference and natural processes such as sea-level rise, climate change and ecological changes on the Mahakam delta in different time scales.
